Context
Optus’s student hub verification journey required entering a student email to allow the offer to be redeemed. The existing journey was quite complicated involving an email verification upfront and a code redemption at checkout. The website was migrating to be on a different platform the business wanted a refresh of the overall UX journey.

Rocky beginnings...
The original plan was to replace getting a promotion code in the email with a link that would automatically redeem the promotion. The main usability issue with this was directing users away from the page, meaning there was a high chance they would not return to the journey.
There also was a large amount of other problems associated with doing this design. It had a risk of costing too to build and the logistics of how the link would work were complicated.

Good example -
Three Mobile
I proposed to the team that this method was not a good option given that there were many outweighing negatives for this option.
An example that highlighted a simple process was Three mobile. An email that ended in '.ac.uk' could redeem their student offers. Whilst it meant that potentially people who weren't students could access these offers it was a good, simple process in comparison to Optus's journey. This process was highlighted to the team as the risks associated with misuse was relatively low.

Simplifying the UX
The team agreed to remove the email validation component and follow the design recommendations . This meant that the process of validating ones email and receiving the promotion could be simplified down to three steps as opposed to the original five.
